Second Grade Favorites and Advice
This week Mrs. Kennedy's Second Grade Super Stars shared some of their favorite activities in second grade. They also gave some good advice to the new first graders. This padlet will be shared with Mrs. Kennedy's new first graders on move up day. Judging from the comments I would say it has been quite a busy year full of learning and fun. Be sure to have your second grader share his/her Second Grade ABC Countdown book for lots more second grade memories. Check the blog later today for some surprise videos.

Life Cycle of Painted Lady Butterfly Non-Fiction Books
As a final project for our Butterfly Life Cycle unit Mrs. Kennedy's Second Grade Super Stars created their own non-fiction book using the app Book Creator. The students applied what they learned about non-fiction text features such as photographs, table of contents. index, glossary, into this published piece of non-fiction. Each student recorded each stage of the butterfly life cycle by taking their own pictures on the ipads. They then used these photographs in their digital books. The students also had to read various non-fiction books and websites to research each of the different stages of the butterfly life cycle. Mrs. Baker helped us get started on using book creator and then helped the students with their final editing and recording their text into the books. Reading, writing, and collaborating skills were all incorporated into the creation of these digital books. You can view each book below by clicking on the red movie camera icon.
Below is video of the combined class books.

Insects in the Schoolyard
Today we were very fortunate to have had another in school field trip. The members of the Mass Audubon came and presented a program called Insects in the Schoolyard. Our enclosed courtyard is perfect for insect hunting and exploring. The students were able to observe some of the insects they found under a microscope for a close up look. The second session involved learning about different characteristics and characteristics of some insects such a Honey Bees and Aphids. Thank you to the Middleton PTO for funding this Field Trip for the second graders. Thank you also to the parent volunteers who came in and helped us find the insects in the courtyard.
ABC Second Grade Countdown
Eighteen days ago Mrs. Kennedy's Second Grade Super Stars began an alphabetical countdown of second grade. Each day the students are illustrating and labeling a second grade memory. This has been a great way to recap and remember all the exciting learning that has taken place in our class this year. Each student will have their own Second Grade alphabet book. Below are some samples of what we have recorded so far.

World of Rope Jumping
On Friday we had our annual visit from Mark Rothstein. Mark teaches the students the importance of character building along with exercising to keep your heart and body healthy. Some of his important messages he teaches the children are respect, integretity, honesty, teamwork, and kindness. Mark hooks the students in by teaching them some fun jump roping techniques. We participated in a whole school session first in the gym and then a separate session for each grade level. Luckily we had a perfect weather day for lots of jump roping fun outside. It was great fun to see all the second graders jump roping together.

Planting the Vegetable Garden
Last Thursday afternoon we buddied up with our first grade friends in Mrs. Thompson's class to plant seeds for the vegetable garden in the courtyard. We planted sugar snap peas and Mrs. Thompson's class planted beans. Before we went outside and planted the seeds the students shared a poem together about planting a seed. After planting, the buddies shared the steps of how to plant a seed together. We hope we will have some yummy vegetables for our lunch in September.
